International Legal Counsel

Scotiabank is seeking a highly skilled Legal Counsel to join our team in Toronto, Canada. As a key member of our Legal Department, you will provide expert legal advice and support to our senior executive management team and business lines on strategic transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and other complex commercial arrangements.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide legal advice and support on domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, equity investments, and other strategic transactions.
- Contribute to the overall success of the Legal Department in Canada, ensuring specific individual goals and plans are executed in support of the Bank's business strategies and objectives.
- Lead and manage teams of external legal counsel, including specialists in corporate/commercial, securities, regulatory, competition, tax, real estate, employment and labor, pensions and benefits, intellectual property, litigation, and information technology.
- Develop and maintain subject matter expertise in multiple jurisdictions in the complex fields of mergers and acquisitions, corporate and commercial law, and other specialty areas relevant to Scotiabank's transactions.
- Assist with the settlement and resolution of legal disputes relating to transactions.
- Graduate of a recognized law school.
- At least 4 years of private practice or in-house experience.
- Membership in the law society of one of the provinces of Canada.
- Exceptional analytical, leadership, problem-solving, relationship-building, negotiating, communication, and project/people management skills.
- Extensive experience evaluating, negotiating, structuring, and leading complex cross-border M&A transactions from a leading international law firm.
- Significant experience with various complex specialized areas of law, including corporate, commercial, and securities law.
- Requires expansive deal experience and experience with strategic transactions in the financial services sector.
