The SFSS Human Resources Lead plays a crucial role in providing human resources support to the Society, ensuring a positive labour and employee relations climate. This position reports to the Executive Committee and Board of Directors through the President.
Key Responsibilities:- Develop and implement best practices in human resources management, including policy development, investigations, and performance management.
- Conduct thorough investigations and support managers in performance management, ensuring a fair and equitable process.
- Handle grievance management and arbitration processes efficiently, maintaining a healthy employer-union relationship.
- Oversee the administration of union reclassifications and compensation practices, ensuring compliance with collective agreements and relevant legislation.
- Participate actively in collective bargaining to maintain a positive employer-union relationship.
- Conduct payroll for staff and Board member stipends, ensuring compliance with statutory and contractual requirements.
- Implement a performance management process for all staff, working closely with the Executive Committee.
- Organize a yearly staff retreat, ensuring a positive and inclusive experience for all staff members.
- Act as one of the Employer representatives in bargaining activities during Collective Agreement renewal years, ensuring the Bargaining Committee is convened and research and prepares for bargaining rounds.
- Ensure the Board receives regular and relevant updates regarding SFSS internal operations, including financial, policy, and personnel issues.
- Maintain up-to-date job descriptions and oversee all job postings, ensuring accurate and timely communication with stakeholders.
- Recruit, orient, train, coach, allocate tasks, review performance, and supervise administrative personnel, ensuring a positive and inclusive work environment.
- Act as one of the Staff Liaison Officers, maintaining accurate, up-to-date, complete, and confidential personnel files.
- Process or approve all staff absences and evaluate staff performance and grievances, working closely with the HR and Personnel Committee.
- Provide resources and support in cases of discipline and discharge of unionized staff, ensuring compliance with collective agreements and relevant legislation.
- Apply provisions within the Collective Agreement, working closely with the HR and Personnel Committee.
- Assist with and provide expertise, advice, and direction on human resource matters, including the Collective Agreement, Personnel Policies, occupational health and safety, employment standards legislation, WCB requirements, staff benefits, and insurance.
- Ensure that all staff members receive an orientation to the SFSS, their workplace, the Collective Agreement, and the Personnel Policies.
- Track use of employee leave entitlements and maintain confidential personnel files, working closely with the President.
- Collaborate with Return-to-Work Case Coordinators in Workplace Health Services to develop action plans for returning employees to the workplace.
- Perform all other human resource duties assigned by the President, the Executive Committee, and the Board of Directors.
- Bachelor's degree in business administration or similar, with demonstrated academic preparation in human resources management and organizational behavior.
- 5 years of recent and related supervisory/management experience in a complex and dynamic unionized work environment, with 3 years in a leadership role in human resources and/or labour relations management.
- Thorough knowledge of current human resource management practice.
- Experience in the administration of collective agreements and the conduct of collective bargaining in a complex unionized environment.
- Knowledge of provincial and federal legislation governing human resource and labour relations practices.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
- Experience in public sector environment is considered an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication (both verbal and written) skills.
- Excellent ability to provide advice and support decisions.
- Ability to work with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to write accurate minutes and reports.
- Ability to exercise discretion, initiative, and diplomacy.
- Ability to work within broad parameters, competing deadlines/priorities, and with frequent interruptions.
- Familiarity with the workings of HR information systems.
- Demonstrated commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
We offer competitive compensation with a range of $80,000 – $90,000 annually, along with an extensive benefits package including but not limited to a full range of dental, extended health, and life insurance plans, leave provisions, and an initial annual vacation entitlement of 3-4 weeks. Subsequent salary increases are at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
