Job Title: Specialist, Orientation and Mobility

Join Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada, a unique health services organization that serves people who are blind or partially sighted across the country. We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Specialist, Orientation and Mobility to join our team.

About the Role:

This is a full-time, permanent position that requires the successful candidate to provide training and support to individuals with vision loss, empowering them to develop or restore activities of daily living skills, promote independence, enhance safety and mobility. The Specialist, Orientation and Mobility will work closely with ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other healthcare professionals to provide essential care on a referral basis in homes, workplaces, and communities across the country.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct assessments and document the O&M needs and personal goals of individuals with vision loss.
  • Develop and implement individualized orientation and mobility service plans.
  • Teach concept development, spatial and sensory awareness, pre-cane skills, cane techniques, and travel skills.
  • Provide information and lessons in the use of electronic travel aids.
  • Act as a resource person for information regarding guide dog schools and provide skill development to prepare individuals to work with a guide dog.
  • Maintain all case data and documentation consistent with VLRC Systems and Procedures.
  • Perform administrative duties, including service tracking, benchmarking, and report writing.
Requirements:
  • Graduate of the Instructor for Blind and Visually Impaired Program (Mohawk College) or Diploma in Specialized Studies, O&M and Vision Rehabilitation (University of Montreal).
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent.
  • ACVREP Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS) certification.
  • Good command of relevant computer applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
