Course Information:

This course, FSC361H5S - Mental Illness and the Criminal Justice System, is a comprehensive exploration of forensic mental health issues within the criminal justice system. The course will delve into the nature and extent of mental illness in society, as well as the legal, social, and ethical issues that arise when a mentally disordered individual interacts with the justice system.

Course Objectives:

  • To develop students' knowledge of forensic mental health issues
  • To understand the medical and legal definitions of mental disorder and their relationship
  • To examine the criteria for state-compelled treatment and its impact on individual autonomy
  • To explore the changing views of the justice system's duty to accommodate victims and witnesses with mental health issues
  • To analyze the fitness to stand trial and the defense of not criminally responsible
  • To discuss the Review Board process

Teaching Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the preparation and delivery of course material, preparation and delivery of assignments, tests, and/or exams, supervision of teaching assistants, marking of students' work, submission of grades to university officials, and holding regular office hours.

Preferred Qualifications:

Relevant qualification, professional designation, or professional experience is an asset. The ideal candidate will have teaching excellence and mastery of the subject area, as well as experience with management and delivery of courses using University of Toronto or similar systems.
