The Opportunity:
Maple Leaf Foods is seeking a highly skilled Health and Safety Specialist to join its Operations team. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the company's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) programs, policies, systems, and reports for the Heritage Plant.
This role requires a strong understanding of legislative and regulatory requirements, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with operations teams to ensure compliance. You will be responsible for assisting in the development of safe work procedures, training, claims management, and assessing/controlling risk to reduce/eliminate accidents/incidents that cause personal injury and/or property damage.
The successful candidate will be involved in all Health and Safety activities related to the Heritage Plant, including developing and constructing Safe Work Procedures (SWPs), enforcing the company's Golden Rules and other site programs, maintaining OHS metrics and documentation, and designing and delivering training programs for workers, management, and Safety Committee members.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement OHS programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in the development of safe work procedures, training, and claims management to reduce/eliminate accidents/incidents.
- Enforce the company's Golden Rules and other site programs through cross-functional team meetings.
- Maintain OHS metrics and documentation, including presenting information to applicable parties.
- Design and deliver training programs for workers, management, and Safety Committee members to comply with legislative requirements and improve Health, Safety, Emergency, and Security.
- Assist in the reduction of Health and Safety risks and hazards through onsite behavioral observations and targeted audits.
- Support Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews (PSRs) for installation of new equipment, structures, protective elements, or processes.
- Review and monitor on-site Contractor OHS programs and compliance with applicable regulations.
- Respond to and provide support in accident response, including first aid and support proper investigation and follow-up.
- Support emergency management activities, including drills, tabletop exercises, evacuation support, and responding to support the incident command structure in the event of an actual emergency.
- Maintain content and data analysis of supporting software for site programs under the purview of the department.
- Maintain records and documentation for all programs under your purview.
Requirements:
- 3-5 years of experience in progressively responsible H&S roles.
- Previous experience working supporting a large client group in a fast-paced environment within specified time frames is an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
- Knowledge of compliance and regulatory training of all personnel working onsite.
- Computer proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of software – MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Previous experience working with regulatory bodies such as the Ministry of Labour or Ministry of the Environment would be an asset.
- Knowledge in WSIB claims management would be considered an asset.
