Job Summary:

The Director of Finance at VON Canada is responsible for overseeing the organization's financial policies and procedures to ensure effective use of assets and safeguarding of company resources. This role requires strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills to provide support to the Finance department and liaise with operational sites.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to optimize return on assets.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, aligning with business unit strategic outcomes.
  • Establish effective internal controls and risk management strategies to safeguard company assets.
  • Optimize delivery of professional financial and accounting services with a customer-centric approach.
  • Deploy finance resources efficiently, aligning talent competencies, professional development, and training opportunities.
  • Develop and implement professional accounting standards for compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and external reporting requirements.
  • Lead the process for preparing monthly financial statements, ensuring accuracy within established timelines.
  • Ensure balance sheet accounts are reconciled, analyzed, and supported with audit evidence.
  • Lead the process for preparing external funder reporting, ensuring accuracy and delivery within established timelines.
  • Prepare audit requirements and ensure accuracy within pre-established timelines.
  • Provide responses to auditor inquiries.
  • Prepare complex financial analysis to support operations and corporate services departments in decision-making processes.
  • Oversee preparation of operational budgets, including support for Site Operations departments and Finance Managers or Corporate Services departments.
  • Oversee preparation of annual audit templates supporting annual audited financial statements.
  • Review and implement control processes to ensure accuracy in financial statements.
  • Attend finance meetings to support Site Operations in reviewing financial results and understanding actual variances compared to budget.

Education, Designations, and Experience:

  • Post-secondary degree, preferably in Accounting or Finance.
  • Professional accounting designation as a Certified Professional Accountant (CPA).
  • Minimum of 7 years' experience, including 3 years' experience managing people within a finance department and experience in financial reporting.
  • Strong technical knowledge of Canadian GAAP, specifically in a not-for-profit environment.
  • Experience implementing process improvements.
  • Experience with SAP, Board, Cognos, Procura, and AlayaCare is considered an asset.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying (using proper techniques), bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics. Individuals in this role are required to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
