About the Role

The Network and Telecom Specialist is a highly technical position that requires in-depth subject matter expertise. The role is responsible for ensuring the overall availability, stability, performance, and integrity of Canadian National Railway's network and telecom infrastructure.

Main Responsibilities
  • Network Operations: Lead and execute installations, upgrades, configuration, and maintenance of the networking infrastructure.
  • Change Management: Review and approve change controls, quality review of infrastructure changes and implementations.
  • Problem Investigation: Lead problem investigation and follow-up on resolution, perform preventive maintenance tasks, and monitor and maintain system availability and performance.
  • Process Improvement: Work with other team members to develop and implement process improvement, takes ownership in defining key performance indicators (KPIs) related to capacity and performance, service/network, and create and maintain operational documentation.
  • Technical Expertise: Advanced troubleshooting, vulnerability, and bug corrections with vendors, ensure compliance with all appropriate CN IT standards, train and coach team on new capabilities and upcoming technology trends, automate and optimize support tasks.
  • Project Delivery: Work with project team to deliver required infrastructure/solutions, participate in the project transition and support strategies (T2C), act as a Telecom lead on a set of assigned strategies and projects, create and maintain operational documentation, contribute to technical proposals, specifications, requirements, and design documents, coordinate with internal and external stakeholders and vendors as necessary.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent, Telecommunications specialization preferred.
  • 5+ years in IT with a minimum of 3+ years of demonstrated experience in providing hands-on technical expertise within large corporate environments.
  • Expertise in LAN/WAN technologies, IPAM.
  • Expertise in Datacenter technologies (Leaf and spine technology).
  • Knowledge and troubleshooting skills in EIGRP, IS-IS, BGP, MP-BGP, MPLS, redistribution between different routing protocols.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP stack, IPv4, TCP, UDP, ICMP, ARP, GRE, IPSEC, ESP, NAT, DHCP, DNS, FHRPs, QoS, SNMP, Tacacs, Radius.
  • Knowledge of Cisco Wi-Fi networks, including Cisco Prime, WLCs, APs, ISE, and all related technologies.
  • Experience/knowledge in SD-WAN solutions.
  • Knowledge in cloud solutions (Google, Azure).
  • Experience and knowledge in operations and optimization of IP networks.
  • Good understanding of communications media (fibre, copper, wireless) and structured cabling best practices.
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills.
  • Cisco CCNP/CCIE Certification or equivalent knowledge.
Assets
  • Scripting skills (network automation).
  • Knowledge of Firewall (Juniper and Palo Alto).
  • Experience with cellular solutions, including APN, CDMA, GSM, HSPA, UMTS, GPRS/EDGE, LTE, and others.
  • Experience with Nokia 7750, 7705, and 7210 platforms.
  • Experience in building business cases and providing estimates.
