The Opportunity:

As a key member of the Maple Leaf Foods team, the Occupational Health and Safety Specialist will play a critical role in promoting a safe and healthy work environment. This includes collaborating with the Plant Manager and the Plant Leadership team to identify hazards and assess risks to health and safety. The successful candidate will have expertise in accident prevention and occupational health, providing advice to supervisors and employees to ensure a safe working environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design and implement workplace processes and procedures to protect workers from hazardous work conditions
  2. Prepare written reports and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
  3. Assist in the investigation of accidents and unsafe working conditions, studying possible causes and recommending remedial action
  4. Ensure all accidents and near misses are reported and preventative action plans are completed
  5. Assist with the rehabilitation of workers after accidents or injuries and ensure satisfactory return to work
  6. Review, document, and follow up on all hazard reporting
  7. Work with the safety captains and Joint Health and Safety Committee to inspect and test work areas for potential accident and health hazards and implement appropriate control measures
  8. Ensure personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, footwear, and safety helmets, is used in workplaces according to regulations and that dangerous materials are correctly stored
  9. Ensure the company is aware of and complies with all legislation in relation to the use of its plant, equipment, and substances as well as in all workplace activities
  10. Act as a facilitator in the promotion of safe work behavior programs
  11. Participate in safety committee meetings as applicable
  12. Assist in the coordination and documentation of training seminars
  13. Assist in the development and communication of Occupational Health and Safety systems
  14. Job Hazard Analysis and creation of Standard Operating Procedures
  15. Promote a safe and healthy work environment and the reduction of lost time due to occupational injury or illness
  16. Assist in special projects and duties as required
  17. Enhance Maple Leaf's profile as a responsible and caring company
  18. May work on weekends and irregular shifts during emergencies
