As an Urban Planning Specialist, you will be responsible for undertaking various duties related to the planning and design of Rapid Transit projects. This will include planning, design, research, analysis, technical, and administrative duties. You will work closely with senior engineers and planners to participate in the planning, design, and implementation of projects of medium to high complexity related to Rapid Transit projects. You will also be responsible for preparing research, technical studies, reports, and presentations on topics of moderate complexity, including undertaking relevant field observations and notes and verifying the accuracy of the content.

Key responsibilities of this role include:

  1. Participating in the planning, design, and implementation of projects of medium to high complexity related to Rapid Transit projects.
  2. Preparing research, technical studies, reports, and presentations on topics of moderate complexity.
  3. Leading the development of conceptual geometric designs using AutoCAD, applying transportation planning and engineering principles to support the implementation of rapid transit projects.
  4. Internal and external communication to ensure that plans and designs are understood by other branches and stakeholders, and completed accordingly.
  5. Identifying data needs and performing moderately complex data analysis to support project decision making.
  6. Creating maps, graphics, and presentations for public consultation and internal communication, including work with GIS software such as MapInfo or ArcGIS and graphic programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and PowerPoint.
  7. Organizing and sometimes leading meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  8. Performing general administrative duties including data entry, taking meeting minutes, taking and organizing photos, and other administrative and/or clerical duties as required.
  9. Receiving, organizing, and responding to public enquiries about transportation policies and active transportation projects.

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced individual with a strong background in urban planning and transportation engineering. You will have a degree in Civil Engineering technology, transportation, or other relevant area of study, and will have experience working on medium to high complexity projects. You will also have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and be able to work well in a team environment with little or no supervision under tight deadlines.

The salary for this position is $37.20 to $43.78 per hour, and the position is eligible to be part of the City of Vancouver's Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite.
