Research Associate, Forest Ecology Specialist

NAIT is seeking a highly motivated and science-minded individual to join our research team within the Forest Reclamation and Reforestation Team at the Centre for Boreal Research (CBR).
This role will lead a subset of applied research projects at all stages, including conceptualization and proposal development to project execution and technical deliverable preparation.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in a working environment that presents a wide variety of technical and operational challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducting applied research projects using one or more of the following:
- Conducting literature reviews.
- Searching, selecting, and requesting supplies necessary for the project.
- Managing and responding to project-related emails.
- Field, lab, and greenhouse-related experiment design, execution, and data collection.
- Supervising summer research assistants.
- Fieldwork in a variety of remote locations and climatic conditions.
- Planning and coordination of project activities with centre staff, clients, and other stakeholders.
- Proposal writing, preparation of technical reports of completed projects for the client, for presentation to agency requesting project, or for use in further applied or theoretical research activities.
- Preparation of research extension and communication products: technical notes, white papers, and scientific manuscripts.
Skills & Abilities needed for this role:
- The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with R statistical software and strength in the analysis of complex datasets, use of generalized linear mixed effects models and multivariate techniques employed in the analysis of plant community data.
- Knowledge and experience in fundamental and applied forest ecology is necessary.
- Demonstrated competence in Microsoft Office and ArcGIS software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills through preparation of technical reports, manuscripts, and research proposals.
- Strong verbal communication skills demonstrated through experience in teaching, presentation of findings at conferences as well as previous project work requiring communication with the broader public.
- Ability to work independently and lead junior team members.
- Demonstrated experience working in the field; this position requires extensive outdoor work on uneven terrain and in remote locations.
- Due to the needs of field work, this position requires a level of physical capacity (fitness) to safely work in the field, at times carrying heavy loads (field supplies, < 50 pounds) on uneven terrain.
- Experience driving 4WD trucks on gravel roads.
- Training and experience conducting vegetation identification surveys.
Qualifications:
- Master's Degree (PhD preferred) in ecology with focus on native plant communities.
- At least 5 years of related experience.
- Post-doctoral experience is considered an asset.
- Experience in experimental design and execution.
- Demonstrated training and/or use of R software.
- Class 5 license with clean driver's abstract.
