About This Opportunity
Black & McDonald's Western Utilities team is growing, and we're looking for a skilled and collaborative individual to join our hard-working, innovative team.
The Lead Hand will be responsible for performing and leading general activities on year-round underground URD distribution construction sites in Calgary and surrounding areas. They will liaise with tradespersons, coordinators, managers, and site superintendent personnel to accomplish project milestones in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Take initiative to lead a URD team.
- Load and unload construction materials and move materials to work areas.
- Assist tradespersons (electricians) as required.
- Provide direction and guidance to heavy equipment operators to secure special attachments to equipment, signal operators to guide them in moving equipment, and provide assistance in other activities.
- Assist in installing various utilities and being familiar with specifications requirements with Fortis, Atco Gas, Shaw/Rogers, and TELUS shallow installation practices.
- Level earth/sand/gravel to fine-grade specifications using a rake and shovel.
- Operate pneumatic tools, tampers, and tools as directed.
- Direct traffic at or near construction sites.
- Perform other activities at construction sites as directed.

Education Requirements
- High School Diploma
Work Experience Requirements
- 2-5 years' experience working in the construction industry in a General Laborer role, on utilities (electrical/civil) projects.
Skills, Abilities, and Other Requirements
- Ability to work safely
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Possesses a valid Alberta Driver's License, Class 5 (or 3), and a clean driver's abstract
- Experience in reading and interpreting utility locates/blueprint drawings and ordering materials such as aggregates
- Ground Disturbance Certification
- Construction Safety Certifications, including Traffic Control Person (TPS) Certification, Flagging Certification, Confined Space Awareness/Rescue, Fall Arrest, WHMIS, First Aid, and Leadership for Safety Excellence (LSE)
