Research Assistant

The University of British Columbia is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to join the Ryerson/Goobie Lab team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical support and assisting in various projects related to sample collection, biobank management, and multi-omic data analysis for patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD).
Key Responsibilities- Plan, optimize, and perform experiments utilizing complex procedures, including immunoassays, western blot, cell culture, and cell-based assays.
- Handle and process patient samples, including blood, sputum, saliva, sinus, and lung tissue.
- Isolate and characterize RNA and DNA.
- Perform basic literature and internet searches for research and laboratory-related resources.
- Maintain research-related records and ILD biobank database, entering data according to established protocols.
- Order equipment, reagents, and supplies, and liaise with vendors and institutional finance and procurement departments.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot problems with standard equipment.
- Organize laboratory and stock, maintain inventory.
- Prepare and/or maintain media, buffer, reagents, solutions, cultures, and related material for routine laboratory use.
- Provide lab orientation and training for equipment, techniques, and SOPs to new staff and students, and record keeping of training certificates/logs of lab members.
- Write SOPs for new studies.
- Write reports and amend Biosafety Ethics to meet safety requirements.
- Biobank samples and maintain inventory list.
- Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own.
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Must be fastidious with respect to lab records and protocols.
- An understanding of or background in techniques such as tissue culturing, flow cytometry, gene expression profiling, and ELISAs would be a strong asset.
- Experience in training others is an asset.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment is an asset.
