We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Environmental Health and Safety Specialist to join our team at Novolex. As a key member of our Operations Management team, you will play a critical role in supporting our Health and Safety Management System and OHS initiatives at the plant level.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain a working knowledge of OHSA and updated regulations, and make recommendations for their implementation.
- Maintain the Emergency Response Programs and provide training when necessary.
- Conduct Health & Safety orientation for new hires.
- Assist in completing Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for critical jobs in conjunction with supervisors and specified employees, such as JHSC members.
- Coordinate EHS training programs and create training materials where required.
- Coordinate, and maintain emergency evacuation plans, including evacuation drills.
- Schedule and lead JHSC meetings and prepare meeting minutes.
- Provide timely reporting on Health & Safety statistics to the EHS Manager.
- Coach supervisors in performing accident/incident investigations.
- Participate in monthly EHS workplace assessments and audits.
- Communicate and interact with internal staff, visitors, clients, and vendors.
- Manage the contractor safety program: orientation training, records management, and compliance with requirements.
- Monitor and update safety goals and KPIs.
- Any other duties as may be assigned.
- Minimum completion of the post-secondary diploma, preferably in Health & Safety.
- 2-3 years of experience in occupational health & safety in an industrial establishment, preferably in manufacturing.
- Experience in a unionized work environment will be an asset.
- Strong ability to interpret legislation and assess EHS issues.
- Experience in WSIB claims management is required.
- Experience in auditing health and safety management systems.
- Thorough knowledge of the OHSA and workers' compensation legislation.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Strong English communication skills (verbal and written).
- Must be a highly motivated, service and team-oriented individual with high attention to detail.
- Proficient with database applications and with Microsoft Office applications.
