The Government of New Brunswick seeks a highly skilled and experienced Senior Legal Advisor to join our team. As a key member of the Office of the Ombud, this individual will play a critical role in promoting fairness, transparency, and accountability in public administration.

About the Role

The successful candidate will provide operational leadership and direction in areas assigned by the Ombud, including advancing and quality of informal resolution of complaints and/or conduct of investigations. They will also set and meet service objectives and standards, as well as lead and direct the work of other legal counsel within the office.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct complex legal research, representing the Ombud in legal proceedings, and providing legal advice related to legislation under the jurisdiction of the Ombud
  • Provide expert and authoritative advice, guidance, and support to the Ombud in exercising their responsibilities
  • Oversee and conduct performance or conformity audits, leading and directing the work of other legal counsel within the office, and any external counsel

Requirements

  • University degree in law and membership in good standing with the Law Society of New Brunswick
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively more responsible experience related to the position
  • Experience in management of human and financial resources, as well as interpretation of legislation, regulation, and policy
  • Demonstrated leadership and effective relationship management capability with various clients and stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in law, public administration, business administration, or other field related to the position
  • Five years or more at the senior executive level with financial and human resources management responsibilities
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and conducting litigation, alternative dispute resolution, investigations, and performance or conformity audits
  • Demonstrated experience working in a government or legislative setting and environment

Assessment Criteria

  • Knowledge of the role, responsibilities, and mandates of the Office of the Ombud
  • Knowledge of the public environment in which the Office of the Ombud conducts its work, including its key stakeholders

Technical Competencies

  • Specialized knowledge of relevant laws, judicial process, procedures, and legal precedents
  • Financial management skills
  • Human resources management skills
  • Planning and organizing skills

Language Requirements

The position requires competency in English. Language proficiency may be assessed through evaluation administered by the Government of NB.

Additional Requirements

  • Candidates must undergo criminal history and security checks prior to appointment
  • Candidates must undertake an oath of office related to specific obligations of the Ombud, namely regarding impartiality and confidentiality of information

Employment Information

This is a management position within the Government of New Brunswick. The salary range is $128,784 - $151,854 annually, depending on education and experience. Consideration may be given to one of the positions being located in Dieppe, New Brunswick, depending on operational requirements.
