Job Summary

The Research Coordinator will provide coordination activities in support of the Department of Surgery's research program, reporting to the Administrative Officer. Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the preparation and submission of competitive applications to research funding agencies
  • Liaising with researchers to determine research needs and providing guidance on potential funding sources
  • Assisting with research accounting activities and providing feedback on research applications
  • Acting as liaison with internal and external granting agencies and the Queen's Office of Research Services

Key Responsibilities

The Research Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Providing administrative support to the Division of Orthopedic Surgery and the Postgraduate Surgical Residency training program
  • Leading special projects in support of the Division's academic mission
  • Coordinating and providing administrative support to the Department's Research Committee meetings
  • Gathering and reviewing research information for the annual departmental report
  • Setting up and maintaining filing systems and maintaining a running database of all research projects, grants, and Departmental publications

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Completion of a University degree, plus several years of experience in an area relevant to the position involving research coordination, project management, or financial management
  • Previous experience in office administration and financial administration
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures, as well as university structure and financial/computing systems
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Skills and Abilities

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to make decisions under pressure
  • Discretion in dealing with confidential and sensitive administrative and research information
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a strong attention to detail
  • Advanced computer knowledge, specifically of the Internet, Microsoft Office, and database programs

Decision Making

The Research Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Setting priorities and determining which project requires the most attention
  • Determining coordination required in preparing grant and contract proposals
  • Making recommendations regarding improvements to grant applications
  • Determining appropriate use of PeopleSoft to track and report data for individual research accounts
