About This Role

Black & McDonald is seeking a highly skilled Senior Estimator to lead our Western Utilities team. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for analyzing cost estimates and preparing electrical work take-offs on utility projects. Your technical expertise will support project operations, focusing on electrical estimating, reporting, and monitoring progress, planning, scheduling, and handling project changes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare electrical/civil work take-offs and estimates on utility projects, including costs of materials, labor, and equipment required for projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings, and specifications.
  • Assign responsibilities for estimating team members.
  • Review project plans and specifications to confirm complete scope.
  • Prepare conceptual budgets based on minimal information.
  • Manage and coordinate people, software, and other resources for projects ranging from fully defined Bid-Build to conceptual Design-Build.
  • Analyze alternative means and methods to determine the most economic alternative.
  • Identify risk issues and their order of magnitude.
  • Coordinate technical proposal requirements with the Marketing Department.
  • Review and/or manage the review and scoping of specialty contractors' bids.
  • Build effective relationships with customers, design teams, specific contractors, suppliers, and user groups that reflect and support company core values and meet or exceed customer expectations.
  • Actively participate in industry, client, and community relations to enhance the company image.
  • Advise on tendering procedures; examine and analyze tenders, recommend tender awards, and conduct negotiations.
  • Establish and maintain tendering processes, set up cost monitoring, reporting systems, and procedures.
  • Coordinate price packages with suppliers, subcontractors, owners, designers, and architects regarding tenders.
  • Participate in site reviews, tender reviews, tender hand-offs, and project closings, as required.
  • Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Liaise, consult, and communicate with engineers, architects, owners, contractors, and subcontractors, and prepare economic feasibility studies on changes and adjustments to cost estimates.
  • Lead and mentor junior estimators.
  • Conduct material and equipment purchasing for secured key projects.
  • Update and maintain Bid 2 Win/Accubid databases.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements

Degree or Diploma in:

  • Construction Engineering Technology
  • Construction Management
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Trade Certification in Electrical trade school

The following certifications/designations are considered an asset:

  • P.Eng. Designation
  • Electrical trades background
  • Gold Seal Certified (GSC)
  • Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS)
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)

Work Experience Requirements

  • 10+ years' estimating experience on utility construction projects
  • Experience estimating underground/overhead utilities an asset

Skills, Abilities, and Other Requirements

Proficient user of:

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Project)
  • Accubid or Bid2Win

The expected salary range for this role is between $110,000 and $130,000. The starting salary will be based on several factors such as the successful candidate's qualifications, including but not limited to education and experience. Salary is one component of Black & McDonald's total rewards package. Total rewards vary by position and may include additional offerings such as vehicle allowance, group insurance benefits, pension plan, annual performance bonus, career development programs, and other HR programs.
