Senior Counsel, Canadian Disputes

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Senior Counsel to join our team in Toronto, Ontario. As a key member of our Legal Department, you will play a critical role in providing expert advice on securities litigation matters.

Job Summary:

  • Manage external counsel in all aspects of litigation at all levels of court in Ontario and other provinces, developing and implementing strategy for the resolution of litigation.
  • Identify key legal risks and mitigation strategies, ensuring awareness among relevant stakeholders and other members of the TD Legal team.
  • Provide best-in-class litigation advice integrated with business strategies and consistent with enterprise-wide risk policy.
  • Offer guidance on contractual interpretation and drafting, pre-litigation dispute resolution, and litigation risk analysis to other members of the Legal Department and applicable lines of business.
  • Lead privileged internal investigations, providing legal advice on privilege and best practices to relevant stakeholders.
  • Deliver regular reporting to senior members of the Litigation Department and control groups, business executives, and various risk committees.
  • Conduct presentations on best practices, legal developments, and emerging risk areas to business and legal partners, guiding them through workshops and training sessions.
  • Support the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and solutions that mitigate risk and enable business/enterprise priorities.
  • Foster positive working relationships by effectively communicating and sharing information with internal and external business partners.
  • Collaborate on high-priority special projects and other Legal Department initiatives.

Requirements:

  • Law degree from an accredited law school and qualified to practice law in Ontario.
  • At least 7 years of post-call litigation experience working with a law firm, in-house, or relevant regulator, with a solid background in securities litigation.
  • Experience litigating large, complex securities matters.
  • Advanced ability to identify problems and barriers, and implement effective solutions to further business strategy.
  • Demonstrated excellence in judgment, leadership, and relationship management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid collaboration and teambuilding skills.
  • Flexibility to quickly adapt to changing and ambiguous initiatives or requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively across and throughout the enterprise, with teams and independently.
  • Multi-tasking and autonomous operation with limited supervision is critical.
  • Advanced ability to communicate complicated legal issues clearly, succinctly, and effectively to business clients and other professionals, both verbally and in writing.
  • Bilingualism is considered an asset but not necessary.
  • Strong technology aptitude, including proficiency with standard office software and ability to learn new technologies.
