Job Summary:

As a Registered Practical Nurse at McMaster University, you will provide high-quality patient care services under the direction of healthcare practitioners or registered nurses. Your scope of practice will be determined by the College of Nurses of Ontario, and you will be responsible for providing emergency care, clinical nursing, health education, and crisis intervention in a fast-paced clinical setting.

Purpose and Key Functions:

  • Conduct nursing assessments, develop care plans, and provide interventions for patients, including health education and support.
  • Independently provide care to students using medical directives and protocols.
  • Perform patient assessments, determine appropriate action plans, and provide care within your defined scope of responsibility.
  • Triage patients entering the centre to appropriate physicians and healthcare professionals.
  • Monitor patient vital signs, provide general health and wellness education, and explain medical terminology and conditions to patients.
  • Provide first-line supportive counseling to students experiencing crises and screen for risk of suicide.
  • Develop and implement health education programs to promote healthy lifestyles, including healthy eating, exercise, stress management, and sexual health.
  • Communicate and collaborate with external health agencies regarding communicable diseases and information.
  • Organize daily work of clinic teams, including scheduling lab and diagnostic procedures, and follow-up appointments.
  • Ensure adequate supplies are available in exam rooms, including medical and laboratory supplies, vaccinations, and medications.
  • Prepare exam rooms and patient charts prior to patient visits.
  • Complete minor dressing changes for patient wounds and remove sutures.
  • Perform ear syringing and ear examinations, phlebotomy, and provide required assistance to physicians during medical procedures.
  • Administer injections, including vaccinations, immunizations, and skin tests, and refer to medical literature to determine adverse drug reactions and interactions.
  • Utilize medical diagnostic devices, including peak flow monitors and glucometers, and document nursing notes in the electronic health records system.
  • Complete and submit forms to external health agencies and calculate dosages for medication administration.
  • Ensure that medical information and literature are provided to patients, and receive and resolve patient complaints.
  • Organize transportation for clients with mental and physical health concerns, and ensure test specimens are properly labeled and requisitions are completed and sent to the lab for processing.
  • Update and maintain confidential files and records, and prepare and send sensitive medical records to clients electronically.

Supervision:

You will frequently be responsible for orienting and supervising new RPNs and students to use electronic medical records and understand clinical policies and procedures.

Requirements:

  • 2-year Community College diploma in Registered Practical Nursing.
  • Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a certified Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) and hold a current certificate of competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Requires 3 years of providing care to a diverse patient population for a wide range of medical and mental health issues.
