Job Summary:

As a Registered Practical Nurse at McMaster University, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality healthcare services to patients. Under the direction of healthcare practitioners or registered nurses, you will be responsible for delivering emergency care, clinical nursing, health education, and crisis intervention in a fast-paced clinical setting.

Purpose and Key Functions:

  • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments, develop care plans, and provide interventions to patients, including health education and support.
  • Independently provide care to students using medical directives, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Perform patient assessments, determine appropriate action plans, and provide care within defined scope of responsibility.
  • Triage patients entering the centre to appropriate physicians, prioritizing their needs.
  • Monitor patient vital signs, providing timely interventions as needed.
  • Provide general health and wellness education to patients, explaining medical terminology and conditions in a clear and concise manner.
  • Offer first-line supportive counseling to students experiencing crises, screening for risk of suicide.
  • Teach patients healthy lifestyle habits, including nutrition, exercise, stress management, and healthy relationships.
  • Communicate and collaborate with external health agencies regarding communicable diseases and information.
  • Organize daily work of clinic teams, ensuring efficient operations.
  • Perform daily monitoring of vaccine fridges, ordering vaccines and medications as needed.
  • Schedule lab and diagnostic procedures, follow-up appointments, and ensure adequate supplies in exam rooms.
  • Prepare patient charts, exam rooms, and ensure minor dressing changes are completed for patient wounds.
  • Perform ear syringing, ear examinations, and phlebotomy for students unable to attend laboratory.
  • Assist physicians with medical procedures, administering injections, and referring to medical literature for adverse drug reactions and interactions.
  • Utilize medical diagnostic devices, document nursing notes, and complete forms for external health agencies.
  • Calculate medication dosages, ensuring accurate administration.
  • Provide patients with relevant medical information and literature.
  • Receive and resolve patient complaints, escalating unresolved issues to the appropriate area.
  • Organize transportation for clients with mental and physical health concerns.
  • Ensure test specimens are properly labeled and requisitions are completed and sent to the lab for processing.
  • Update and maintain confidential files and records.
  • Prepare and send sensitive medical records to clients electronically.

Supervision:

Frequently responsible for orienting and supervising new RPNs and students on using electronic medical records and understanding clinical policies and procedures.

Requirements:

  • 2-year Community College diploma in Registered Practical Nursing.
  • Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a certified Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) and hold a current certificate of competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Requires 3 years of providing care to a diverse patient population for a wide range of medical and mental health issues.
