About the Opportunity

The Nunatsiavut Government is seeking a highly skilled and experienced legal professional to join our team as Chief Legal Advisor.

Job Summary

We are looking for an individual with strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, who has a deep understanding of government processes, policy development, and risk management. The successful candidate will provide legal advice and support to the NG and the Nunatsiavut Assembly on a variety of legal issues including lands and natural resources, governmental affairs, public and administrative law, procurement, Indigenous rights, and environmental law.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and support to the NG and the Nunatsiavut Assembly on various legal matters.
  • Assist senior government staff in the development and preparation of legislation, policies, and directives.
  • Advise on interpretation and implementation of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement and national, provincial, and international laws, policies, and initiatives related to Indigenous peoples and Indigenous Rights.
  • Handle legal proceedings in which the NG is involved, including civil and regulatory proceedings, environmental assessments, judicial reviews, inquiries, and proceedings before boards, commissions, and tribunals.
  • Negotiate settlements or agreements on behalf of the government.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from a recognized university.
  • Experience with public law, constitutional law, administrative law, and regulatory compliance.
  • Membership in the Newfoundland and Labrador Law Society.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and organizational abilities.
