Job Title: Learning Assistant

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Learning Assistant to join our team at Rocky View Schools. As a Learning Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the diverse needs of learners within the classroom, school, and community settings.

Job Summary

The Learning Assistant will work collaboratively with teachers to adapt and implement programs for students with complex needs, with a focus on promoting their health, learning, and independence. This is a full-time, continuing position starting immediately at C.W. Perry School.

Responsibilities
  • Provide assistance to students as identified in their individualized plans, including those who require additional types of supports such as personal, medical care, and safety needs.
  • Implement and reinforce strategies as directed by the teacher(s) and identified in student Personalized Learning Plan (PLP), Individualized Program Plans (IPP), Behaviour Support Plans (BSP), safety plans, and medical plans.
  • Record observations and other data on behavioral challenges and create records that can be used to support positive behavior strategies for students.
  • Participate in collaborative planning meetings for IPP's or SSP's as requested.
  • Provide assistance with preparation of individualized program materials under the direction of the classroom teacher/student support teacher.
  • Actively promote student learning and independence.
  • Facilitate interaction among students with special needs and their peers.
  • Respect confidentiality and maintain privacy of information related to students and personnel.
  • Support students with routine personal care activities such as toileting, movement, personal hygiene, eating, drinking, and feeding.
  • Assist in exercising, adaptive physical education, range of motion programs and fine and gross motor skills development as directed by a specialist and monitored by a teacher.
  • Support students' medical needs as directed, including assisting the student with transfers, tube feeding and managing tracheotomy needs, oxygen, catheterization, administration of prescription medication, and other routine medical requirements.
Requirements
  • Educational Assistant Certificate or a certificate/diploma in a related field.
  • Training in preventative/de-escalating behavior, or willingness to become certified.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working with students with challenging behavior and applying positive behavior supports is considered an asset.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification or willingness to become certified is considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of Education and Experience may be considered.
