Job Summary:

The Activity Instructor II (AI2) is a key member of the Prairie Mountain Health team, responsible for providing mobile community-based services to individuals with mental health problems. This role involves assessing, developing, and implementing individual and group programming to engage clients with their environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement therapeutic relationships with clients to promote empowerment, independence, and self-responsibility.
  • Assess client strengths, interests, goals, barriers, and functional needs to create personalized plans.
  • Collaborate with clients and their support networks to deliver effective programming.
  • Implement and evaluate activity plans, providing constructive feedback to promote personal growth.
  • Provide ongoing teaching, training, and guidance to clients and their support networks.
  • Monitor and modify client plans to accommodate fluctuations in functioning and extenuating circumstances.
  • Develop and post activity schedules to enhance client participation.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary planning and communicate with team members to ensure effective client assignments.
  • Consult with Occupational Therapists, Community Mental Health Workers, and other team members to address client needs.

Health Promotion and Disease Prevention:

  • Participate in planning and delivering health-promoting programs to clients, families, and internal and external partners.
  • Communicate with clients, internal and external partners to increase awareness, knowledge, and understanding of mental health issues.
  • Plan and deliver health-promoting activities with clients, families, and internal and external partners.
  • Participate in mental health promotion through education and public relations activities for clients, families, community groups, and organizations.

Crisis Management:

  • Facilitate ongoing client education and training related to safe work practices.
  • Mediate risk and address safety concerns for clients within the environment.
  • Assess potential crisis situations and intervene to de-escalate or defuse situations.
  • Engage clients and relevant others in the development and documentation of a work-related crisis plan.
  • Problem-solve and provide feedback to involved parties following each crisis situation.

Program-Related Responsibilities:

  • Maintain activity program statistics and provide monthly reports.
  • Record assessments, activity plans, and evaluations appropriately, as per program requirements.
  • Ensure a sufficient inventory of supplies is available to meet activity program requirements.
  • Ensure equipment is used safely, stored appropriately, and maintained in good working order.
  • Prepare area budgets and report anticipated variances in conjunction with the manager/supervisor.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to patients and their families.
  • Prioritize workload by utilizing sound organizational skills.
  • Recognize legal issues related to the treatment of patients, particularly the provision of the Mental Health Act and Protection for Persons in Care Act.
