Job Summary

Okanagan College is seeking a Support Worker for Students with Special Needs to provide individualized support to students with special needs in the Accessible Education and Training class or in the SAME Program. The successful candidate will work under the general supervision of the Instructor to provide a variety of supports in and out of the classroom, including mobility support, personal care, communication support, social support, study skills, learning assistance, organizing finances, anger management, and conflict resolution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support a student(s) with special needs in or out of the classroom, providing as needed some combination of mobility support, orientation support, personal care, communication support, social support, study skills, learning assistance, finance management, anger management, and conflict resolution.
  • Support the instructor with the modification of learning materials, material delivery, and evaluation, including preparing modified materials for class, meetings with the instructor to review student needs and progress, and discussing accommodations and modifications with the instructor.
  • Function as a liaison with the student's instructors, caregivers, community network, and the ASE department to ensure clear communication between student(s) and instructor(s), keep in contact with caregivers regarding student needs, communicate with relevant agencies when necessary, and report regularly to the ASE department Chairperson.

Requirements

  • Completion of Grade 12 plus graduation from a one year community college program in a related area such as a social services field.
  • Up to and including 6 months related experience.
  • Knowledge of the issues related to students with special needs, strong communication skills, good time management, organizational, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to provide personal care.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum CEA or HSW Certificate is required in addition to 6 months of experience working with students with special needs.
