Role Overview

We are currently seeking a Casual Speech and Language Therapist to join our team at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, BC.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Casual Speech and Language Therapist with Fraser Health, providing speech language pathology services in accordance with the College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of BC (CSHHPBC) standards of practice, Fraser Health mission, values and speech language pathology acute care standard.

Your Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct comprehensive assessments of patient communication, speech and swallow functional abilities, needs, and goals by reviewing records, gathering information, interviewing patients, identifying patient and speech language pathologist expectations, selecting and applying evidence-based assessment methods, consulting with members of the health care team, performing examinations, and monitoring patients' health to improve, maintain or support speech, language, voice and/or swallowing performance.
  2. Analyze patients' needs, establish speech language and dysphasia diagnosis and prognosis, and develop evidence-based, outcome-focused intervention strategies; utilize assessment and reassessment findings, discuss analysis with patients and caregivers, develop short and long-term goals, and select a practice model/intervention consistent with patient needs and goals to achieve optimal health outcomes.
  3. Implement interventions in accordance with established treatment guidelines and educate patients and caregivers regarding self-management, health promotion, and injury/disability prevention.
  4. Participate in interprofessional care planning processes for patients as appropriate by ensuring plans are established and implemented effectively, updating care plans, intervening as necessary, and collaborating and communicating on issues affecting care/transfer/discharge plans.
  5. Evaluate and document the effectiveness of interventions by conducting ongoing assessments and monitoring patient responses, evaluating changes in health status, evaluating speech language performance and swallowing function against pre-determined goals and expected outcomes, and modifying intervention strategies to achieve and maintain optimal functional independence and speech and language performance.
  6. Identify and facilitate referrals to appropriate healthcare/community programs and maintain seamless quality patient care.
  7. Collaborate with patients and their families/caregivers in developing care plans, encouraging family participation in plan development, implementation, and modification, establishing therapeutic relationships by demonstrating empathy, trust, and respect, advocating for patients' rights to privacy, dignity, and access to information, and ensuring patients' choice and autonomy in decision-making and care planning.
  8. Maintain accurate records, including patient files, by gathering information, entering data into computerized databases, and documenting information into approved formats, noting patient progress, changes to treatment plans, and recording test/treatment results to provide evidence and rationale supporting assessment findings and intervention plans.
  9. Delegate components of treatment to speech and hearing assistants by providing work direction, verbal and/or written instructions, ensuring and documenting the transfer of function, and ensuring quality patient care.
  10. Act as a resource to other speech language pathologists, speech and hearing assistants, and students by assisting with orientation, demonstrating procedures, providing speech language pathology information, and attending meetings as a representative of speech language pathology.
  11. Participate in approved research, special projects, and committees, including professional practice councils and clinical decision support tool development.

Qualifications and Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to have current registration with the College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of BC (CSHHPBC) including applicable College certification(s). You will also need to demonstrate knowledge of speech language pathology theory and practice within a patient and family-centered model of care, communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals, teach and provide effective consultation to patients, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals, and operate related equipment including relevant software applications.
