Public Health Nurse

The Public Health Nurse (PHN) is a vital member of an interdisciplinary team responsible for delivering programs and services in accordance with NS Public Health Standards and Protocols. The PHN demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of individuals and communities, enabling them to inform content, development, implementation, and assessment of the impacts of policies and/or programs.
Reporting to the Public Health Manager, the PHN collaborates with others to address local population health needs by planning, implementing, and evaluating public health policies, programs, and services through actions based on the principles of population health, health promotion, and disease prevention.
About YouWe are seeking a qualified candidate who possesses the following qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (BScN) and registered with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN)
- 1 year minimum nursing experience in Public Health or Community Health required, two (2) years experience preferred
- Certificate in Public Health Nursing an asset
- Nova Scotia Public Health Immunization Certification or willingness to complete
- Understanding and knowledge of the Health Protection Act and other relevant Regulations, Legislation and Acts
- Demonstrated knowledge of the health status of populations; inequities in health; the social and ecological determinants of health and illness; social justice; and health emergency preparedness and disaster response
- Understanding of the concepts of population health, health promotion and development and the ability to apply them in community settings, including partnership development
- Critical thinking skills, including clinical judgment, problem solving skills and strong decision-making abilities
- Alignment with EDIRA principles (equity, diversity, inclusion, reconciliation, and accessibility) and ARAO principles (anti-racism and anti-oppression)
- Ability to lift program equipment e.g. large vaccine coolers (Approx. 18 kgs/40lbs)
- Competencies in other languages an asset, including, but not limited to; French, Arabic, Mandarin, Dari, Russian, Ukranian
- A combination of education and experience may be considered
- Varying permanent, temporary assignments, and casual relief opportunities available in various locations throughout Nova Scotia
