About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Pharmacy Technician to join our team at Nova Scotia Health. As a Pharmacy Technician, you will play a critical role in the provision of safe and effective patient care, working closely with our pharmacy team to prepare, package, and dispense medications.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have a strong background in pharmacy technology, with a focus on sterile and non-sterile compounding, dispensing, and inventory management. You will also possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare, package, and dispense medications under the direct supervision of a pharmacist
  • Compounding of sterile and non-sterile dosage forms
  • Dispensing drugs to inpatients and outpatients in unit dose
  • Physician order entry
  • Working with automation
  • Inventory control
  • Medication reconciliation
  • CIVA systems
  • Preparation of chemotherapy doses
  • Distributing narcotics
  • Participating in quality programs and patient safety initiatives
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program
  • Licensure and registration in Nova Scotia as a Pharmacy Technician (NSCP) required
  • Drug administration by injection technical permit (Pharmacy Technician) an asset
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required
  • Experience as a pharmacy technician/pharmacy practice assistant, preferably in a hospital, an asset
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and special precautions used with chemotherapy are an asset
  • Experience in unit dose drug distribution systems, automation technology, decentralized medication dispensing cabinets, an asset
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, inventory control and record keeping
  • Demonstrated good decision making and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical calculations related to medications
  • Knowledge of the law and regulations pertaining to the receipt, storage and distribution of prescription and narcotic drugs
  • Basic typing skills or computer/keyboard experience; skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, etc.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
