QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training And Experience

Education and Experience Required

We are seeking a qualified Public Health Nurse to join our team at Island Health. The successful candidate will have a recognized nursing degree with a community or public health component and at least two years of recent experience working with children, youth and families or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Registration and Certifications

The candidate must be a practicing RN registrant with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives and hold a certificate in Immunization and Breastfeeding. A Cultural Safety Course completion is also required.

Skills And Abilities
  • Relational Model of Care

The successful candidate will be able to practice nursing within a relational model of care, applying intentional, relational practice skills while offering client-centred, trauma-informed practice and culturally safe care.

Equity and Social Justice Lens

The candidate must be able to apply an equity and social justice lens when providing nursing care and engaging in nurse-client relationships.

Community Nursing Theories

The successful candidate will have knowledge and application of community nursing theories, such as Parse's Theory of Nursing.

Reflective Practice

The candidate must be able to actively engage in a practice environment enabled by structured reflective practice.

Communication and Collaboration

The successful candidate will be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain positive working relationships with clients, co-workers, multi-disciplinary teams and community partners.

Nursing Process and Health Promotion

The candidate must be able to apply the nursing process, principles of adult education, health promotion, epidemiology, public health ethics, disease/injury, primary and secondary prevention strategies, and community development.

Workload Management and Autonomy

The successful candidate will be able to organize and prioritize workload, and work independently with limited direction as a member of the team.

Evidence-Based Practice and Universal Interventions

The candidate must be able to apply evidenced-based knowledge to support health-enhancing behaviours to diverse populations through universal and targeted interventions.

Adaptability and Resourcefulness

The successful candidate will be able to be flexible, innovative, and resourceful in adapting to changes in the work environment.

Equipment Operation and Computer Skills

The candidate must be able to operate related equipment and function in a computerized environment using a range of software programs.

Assessment and Problem-Solving

The successful candidate will be able to assess and solve problems effectively.

Physical Ability

The candidate must be able to perform the duties of the position.
