Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Senior Legal Counsel to join our Legal Services Unit (LSU). The successful candidate will lead a component of the LSU team, providing a variety of legal services, including commercial and corporate, regulatory, litigation, and securities legal support to our entire company.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide timely and strategic leadership and advice on all matters of responsibility, with a focus on permitting, compliance, emergency response, and complex litigation matters;
  • Provide oversight of our whistleblower program and associated investigations;
  • Drive knowledge management and legal process improvement initiatives and support corporate productivity initiatives;
  • Effectively lead internal and external legal professionals and provide guidance, training, advice, and support to managers and supervisors in relation to the foregoing;
  • Train, coach, mentor, and manage performance, and facilitate employees' career development;
  • On-board, educate, and train direct reports, including setting and tracking of goals;
  • Respond to inquiries and issues promptly and professionally;
  • Establish and maintain strong and positive working relationships across all levels of the organization;
  • Research and identify technical/functional solutions that will meet business requirements;
  • Support our safety culture of 'Zero by Choice' and the 'Life Saving Rules';
  • Participate and support an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace.
Requirements
  • 10+ years of experience practicing law, a Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree, and a membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta;
  • Significant AER, CER, and/or FERC regulatory and litigation management experience;
  • Experience leading a whistleblower program and investigations;
  • Familiarity with privacy law requirements;
  • Candidates with experience leading an in-house legal team preferred;
  • Ability to understand and deliver on business objectives and priorities and strives to gain strong institutional knowledge about department and company processes;
  • Ability to communicate legal advice clearly, concisely, and practically;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships at all levels of the organization and external service providers;
  • Consummate team player with excellent judgment and the ability to work collaboratively with and direct and influence others by building trust and credibility;
  • A self-starter who is competent in handling multiple tasks in a changing environment with attention to detail;
  • High level of professionalism; handles sensitive/confidential information with appropriate care;
  • Excellent time management and multi-tasking/prioritization abilities;
  • Strong leadership, facilitation, and presentation skills with the ability to communicate appropriately at all levels of the organization;
  • Exhibits a strong propensity for critical thinking coupled with excellent analytical and logical problem-solving abilities.
