Program Overview

The Northern Health Authority is offering a unique training opportunity for individuals to become certified Community Mental Health Workers. This program is designed to provide participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to work effectively in community mental health settings.

Program Details
  • Participants will complete the Community Mental Health Worker certification program through Selkirk College, with tuition paid for by the Ministry of Health.
  • Participants will receive a stipend of $24.80 per hour for 37.5 hours per week, paid via Northern Health Payroll.
  • The Ministry of Health will pay the tuition and fees directly to Selkirk College.
  • Participants will be reimbursed for English Proficiency testing fees, up to a maximum of $400.
  • Travel and overnight stays may be required for clinical placements, with associated costs covered.
Eligibility Criteria
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof in the form of the BC Vaccine Card.
  • Must be a Canadian Citizen or have Permanent Residency status in Canada.
  • Must complete a Criminal Record Check (CRC) for working with children and vulnerable adults.
  • Must have a valid BC Drivers License and personal vehicle, as required for subsequent positions.
  • Must meet the college admission requirements for the Community Mental Health Worker program in a timely manner.
  • Must sign a Twelve (12) month return of service agreement (ROSA).
  • Must sign the Community Mental Health Certificate Program Waiver.
  • Must pass an English proficiency test if English is a second language or if educated outside of Canada.
Program Requirements
  • Participants will be required to work a minimum of 37.5 hours per week.
  • Participants will be required to complete the Community Mental Health Worker certification program.
  • Participants will be required to pass an English proficiency test, if applicable.
Benefits
  • Participants will receive a stipend of $24.80 per hour for 37.5 hours per week.
  • Participants will have tuition and fees paid for by the Ministry of Health.
  • Participants will be reimbursed for English Proficiency testing fees, up to a maximum of $400.
  • Participants will have travel and overnight stays covered for clinical placements.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 (and English 12) or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively, including working with clients living with mental illness and/or substance use challenges.
  • Ability to organize work.
