Occupational Health and Safety Manager

The Occupational Health and Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the OHS Program across all Det'on Cho-owned enterprises. This includes providing technical support, ensuring compliance with regulations, overseeing training, and promoting a safety culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute effective procedures to enhance the OHS Program, review the program annually, and identify policies and procedures needing revision or development.
- Solicit input for changes to policies and procedures at all levels of the organization.
- Communicate and implement changes in collaboration with Senior Management.
- Monitor compliance with policies and procedures and provide feedback to Senior Management.
- Evaluate health and safety practices and procedures for risk assessment and following legal guidelines.
- Ensure monthly inspections are completed and participate in annual inspections.
- Provide hazard identification training and ensure consistent data collection.
- Provide monthly analysis for inspection reports.
- Participate in investigations to find causes and take preventive measures for further incidents.
- Recommend preventive measures for risks/hazards.
- Identify trends in incidents and communicate with senior managers.
- Act as the point of contact with WSCC for all accident and injury claims.
- Administer the Return-to-Work Program and ensure employees return and integrate successfully.
- Provide support to managers and employees regarding WSCC processes.
- Capture WSCC claims in the incident management database and provide support as needed.
- Identify gaps and recommend OHS training.
- Develop the organization's annual training needs to ensure compliance with Legislation and Company standards.
- Develop a standard for new hire orientation outlining the Company's high expectations regarding OHS.
- Conduct training and presentations on health and safety matters and accident prevention.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation and standards, including maintaining records, submitting reports, and performing audits.
- Stay up to date on relevant Legislation and translate business strategies to comply with legislation.
- Represent the organization and act as the point person for communication with regulatory agencies.
- Communicate and interact with provincial and federal agencies requiring deliverable reporting.
- Stay informed about changes in safety regulations and standards applicable to the organization.
- Apply expertise to assess risk and solve problems of varying tasks.
- Review and lead risk assessments for new projects and enforce preventative measures.
- Support senior management on various safety issues that impact the wider industry group.
- Participate in project start-up meetings and understand the scope of work on projects.
- Provide reports to Management/Senior Management/Human Resources on OH&S issues.
- Assist in meeting obligations under the relevant Occupational Health & Safety legislation.
- Provide direct OHS coaching to the site JOSH committees, management, and employees.
- Manage the Site Docs System and ensure completion of corrective actions.
- Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure project safety performance.
- Conduct regular assessments and audits to evaluate adherence to safety standards and identify areas for improvement.
- Provide timely and accurate safety reports to project management and senior leadership.
- Recommend change based on leading indicators and statistical metrics.
- Mentor, train, and support the career development of junior to senior staff involved in OHS.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or related fields.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in safety management.
- Demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of an OHS program on projects of increasing complexity.
- Relevant professional certifications or memberships are advantageous.
- Thorough comprehension of Federal, Provincial, and local regulations about Occupational Health and Safety.
