The Role

We are seeking an experienced Helpline Counsellor to provide compassionate, non-judgmental support to individuals experiencing domestic violence. As the first point of contact with our agency, this role will offer information on domestic violence, abuse, and related programs and services.

Key Responsibilities

  • ">
  • Respond effectively to all requests for shelter admission, assessing service needs and referring to other agencies as required.">
  • Provide telephone crisis counselling, risk assessments, information, and support to assist individuals fleeing domestic violence.">
  • Answer phone lines operated by the Connect Domestic Violence and Abuse Helpline, including the main Helpline, YW Crisis Line, Men's Resource Line, and the Men's Counselling Line.">
  • Offer general information on domestic violence and abuse resources and services at Fear Is Not Love and in the community.">
  • Respond to AskforHelp emails during scheduled shifts.">
  • Provide telephone support to male identifying callers seeking mental health and well-being support.">
  • Manage risk with clients, identifying self or others' risks and consulting with supervisors as needed.">
  • Update occupancy in the ShelterLink app during shifts.">
  • Collaborate with Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter staff and other program departments for efficient client referrals and inquiries.">

Your Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • ">
  • Diploma in Human Services or a related field (degree preferred).">
  • 2+ years of experience directly supporting people in crisis from domestic violence and abuse.">
  • Knowledge of community resources available to individuals experiencing domestic violence and abuse.">
  • First Aid, ASIST, and other certifications required.">
  • Previous experience with administrative duties.">
  • Second language an asset.">
