Qualifications and Requirements

Masters Degree in a health-related discipline from an approved post-secondary institution is required. Additionally, recognized post-basic education related to mental illness, substance use, and concurrent disorders is necessary. Two years of recent, related experience are also required. A significant understanding of mental health issues, substance use issues, and concurrent disorders issues, as well as evidence-based best treatment practices, are essential. Knowledge of applicable legislation, such as the Mental Health Act and the Guardianship Act, is also necessary. Furthermore, knowledge of available programs, their interrelationships, and their function in delivering care in the community to persons with mental illnesses, substance use, and/or concurrent disorders is required. A valid BC Driver's License is also necessary.

Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated practice skills related to cognitive behavioral therapy, brief solution-focused therapy, risk assessment, and other psychotherapeutic interventions are required.
  • Competence in the care and treatment of mental illness, substance use, and/or concurrent disorders is necessary.
  • Effective communication, both verbally and in writing, is required.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively is necessary.
  • Sound organizational and problem-solving skills are required.
  • Clinical coaching/teaching skills and experience are necessary.
  • Sound judgment, good observation, and client assessment skills, tact, and empathy are required.
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrating initiative, with limited supervision is necessary.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a multidisciplinary team is required.
  • Promotion of positive change and independence is necessary.
  • Prioritization and organization of client demands made and care needs are required.
  • Ability to physically and emotionally carry out the duties of the position is necessary.
  • Fostering good public relations is required.
  • Operation of related equipment, including a computer with a variety of Windows-based software, is necessary.
  • Maintenance of a commitment to continued professional development as required by the employer is required.
  • Use of a personal vehicle is necessary.
