Job Summary

The University of Waterloo is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Analytical and Bioanalytical Services Technician to provide technical support to the undergraduate analytical labs and Mass Spectrometry Facility. The successful candidate will be responsible for the set-up and preparation of all instruments, maintenance, and troubleshooting of analytical instrumentation, including GC, GCMS, HPLC, LCMS, IC, and ICPMS.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to undergraduate analytical labs, including instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and training of students and teaching assistants.
  • Responsible for the set-up and preparation of all instruments prior to lab periods and the introduction of experiments.
  • Collaborate with the Analytical Lab Instructor to develop new experiments and methods for undergraduate analytical labs.
  • Provide backup support to the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory Instructor during absences.
  • Responsible for instrument maintenance over holiday shutdown periods.
  • Provide training and supervision to teaching assistants in the undergraduate analytical instrumental lab.
  • Assist with experimental design and data analysis in the Mass Spectrometry Facility.
  • Run samples and prepare data files for external users.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Assist with maintaining the first aid kit, spill kit, and posting safety procedures in the lab and facility.
  • Prepare and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in the Analytical Lab.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections in the Analytical Lab and Mass Spec Facility and advise on safety issues identified.
  • Enforce safety training and requirements for all lab users.
  • Prepare and maintain chemical inventory in accordance with UW and legislative requirements.

Qualifications

  • MSc in Science is required; Analytical or Bioanalytical Chemistry is preferred.
  • A PhD degree is an asset.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in an academic or industrial setting utilizing instrumentation including HPLC, LC, and/or GC.
  • Experience troubleshooting and working with scientific equipment is required.
  • Experience with mass spectrometric techniques and instrument software is required.
  • Safety training in General Laboratory Safety, Laboratory Biosafety, WHMIS, and Compressed Gas training is an asset.
