The Public Health Nurse (PHN) is a key member of an interdisciplinary team responsible for delivering programs and services according to NS Public Health Standards and Protocols. The PHN demonstrates a holistic understanding of individuals and communities, enabling them to inform content, development, implementation, and assessment of policies and programs.

The PHN works collaboratively with the Early Years Consultant and others to address local population health needs by planning, implementing, and evaluating public health policies, programs, and services. They apply the principles of population health, health promotion, and disease prevention.

The PHN is responsible for implementing the Healthy Beginnings Program, including screening, assessing, and supporting families in the prenatal and post-partum period. They facilitate a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach and work with the Early Years team to ensure quality case management.

The PHN works with community partners and stakeholders to address health inequities and improve population health. They provide immunization program support to the Health Protection Team.

The PHN applies health equity, social justice, and determinants of health to all key responsibilities. They engage in independent, interdependent, and dependent actions and activities related to the Public Health Core Competencies.

The PHN ensures that the principles and practices guiding the NSH, such as the vision, mission, values, strategic directions, ethics, safety, quality, partnerships, and inter-professional collaboration, are integrated into their work and the messages they deliver.

About You
  • We are seeking a candidate with a Bachelor in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • A minimum of 1 year of nursing experience in Public Health or Community Health is required.
  • A Certificate in Public Health Nursing is an asset.
  • The candidate must be eligible for registration with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN).
  • Two years of experience are preferred.
  • Experience in prenatal and postnatal education is essential.
  • A Parent Child Interaction certification is preferred.
  • Experience with home visiting is preferred.
  • Experience working with infants and young children is preferred.
  • Experience with families whose life circumstances put them at risk of not achieving healthy pregnancy or healthy child development outcomes is preferred.
  • Understanding of health issues relevant to pregnancy, postpartum/postnatal health for birthing parents and babies, breastfeeding, and parenting is essential.
  • Understanding and knowledge of the Health Protection Act and other relevant Regulations, Legislation, and Acts are required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the health status of populations, inequities in health, the social and ecological determinants of health, social justice, and health emergency preparedness and disaster response are essential.
About You Continued
  • Demonstrated understanding of the concepts of population health, health promotion, and development, and the ability to apply them in community settings.
  • Nova Scotia Public Health Immunization Certification or willingness to complete same; experience in the application of public health principles and practices, and partnership development.
  • Critical thinking skills, including clinical judgment, problem-solving skills, and strong decision-making abilities.
  • Demonstrated alignment with EDIRA principles (equity, diversity, inclusion, reconciliation, and accessibility).
  • Competencies in multiple languages are an asset.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.
Hours
  • Permanent Full Time/75 Hours Bi-weekly.
  • A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
  • Travel will be required.
Compensation and Incentives

$54.11 Hourly.

$56.01 with 25 years' experience.

Successful candidates may be eligible for our benefits package, which includes health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage, as well as a defined benefit pension plan.
