Job Title: Part Time Day Program Instructor

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Part Time Day Program Instructor to join our team at The Salvation Army. As a Part Time Day Program Instructor, you will play a vital role in promoting opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities to develop social skills, life skills, and community participation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Act as a role model and advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities, promoting their independence and self-advocacy.
  • Foster independence in daily living skills, including social skills, life skills, and community participation.
  • Provide support in personal development, as decided through individual program planning.
  • Ensure the safety and health care of individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Provide teaching and support to Enrichment Program participants.
  • Document and maintain records as required.
  • Administer medication, as needed.
  • Ensure learning opportunities are provided using agency and community resources.
  • Maintain effective communication with team members, stakeholders, and individuals with developmental disabilities.
Working Conditions:
  • Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, and bodily waste.
  • Noisy environments.
  • Dealing with angry and abusive individuals.
  • Handling garbage and odors.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and apply effective body mechanics.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • Completed 2-3 years Developmental Services Worker (DSW) Diploma or equivalent degree/diploma.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office and email.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and a current copy of a Driver's abstract.
  • Ability to be certified in Standard First Aid/CPR and NCI.
Experience and Knowledge:
  • Preferred minimum 6 months to 1-year experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Experience with implementing and updating Individual Support Plans (ISP).
  • Experience in community outreach and medication administration.
  • Training and/or experience in personal care and supporting individuals with complex needs.
Skills and Capabilities:
  • Strong counselling/de-escalation skills.
  • Teaching skills, including the ability to implement various teaching approaches and group instruction.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully.
