Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Underwriter to join our Commercial Auto team at CNA. As a key member of our underwriting team, you will be responsible for reviewing applications and determining the acceptability of risks in accordance with company guidelines and standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review applications and requirements for risks requiring complex underwriting skills, determining acceptability and determining the need for additional evidence of insurability and appropriate strategy.
  • Determine appropriate pricing based on financial and competitive analysis in line with compliance requirements.
  • Prepare quotes and answer questions from brokers, policyholders, or other external contacts, escalating issues to management as necessary.
  • Notify brokers of adverse underwriting decisions, rate changes, underwriting requirements, status, and declinations.
  • Analyze quality, quantity, and profitability of risks underwritten and prepare reports for management review.
  • Market products and services through the brokerage community and make field visits, developing and maintaining broker relationships.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to other underwriters and to other functional areas, particularly when related to cross-sell opportunities.
  • Stay current on provincial and federal issues and regulations, industry activity, and trends, freely sharing information with others.
  • Utilize advanced functionality in relevant CNA systems to perform day-to-day activities.
  • Work with specialists or management on risks exceeding authority level or requiring special handling.
Requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of underwriting and insurance industry theories and practices.
  • Demonstrated high level of technical expertise and product-specific knowledge.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and make critical business decisions effectively.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in auto underwriting, with professional designations such as CIP/CRM preferred.
  • Typically a minimum 5 years of commercial auto-specific underwriting experience.
