Supervisor, Building Standards

Job Summary:

Halifax Regional Municipality is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to fill the role of Supervisor, Building Standards. This permanent, full-time position is responsible for leading a team in the enforcement of the Building Code and ensuring compliance with municipal regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Lead a team of building officials in the enforcement of the Building Code and municipal regulations.
  2. Develop and implement procedures for the review and approval of building plans and permits.
  3. Provide technical guidance and support to staff and stakeholders on building code requirements and regulatory compliance.
  4. Communicate with developers, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations.
  5. Investigate and resolve complaints related to building code enforcement.
  6. Prepare and present reports to senior management and council on building code enforcement activities and trends.
  7. Collaborate with other departments and agencies to ensure effective communication and coordination on building code enforcement.
  8. Provide training and development opportunities for staff to enhance their knowledge and skills in building code enforcement.
  9. Stay up-to-date with changes to building codes and regulations and implement updates in a timely manner.
Requirements:
  • Advanced diploma or degree in a related field, such as building science, architecture, or engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in building code enforcement or a related field.
  • Proven leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and direct a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations, with the ability to interpret and apply them in a practical context.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks effectively.
