Reliability Engineer

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Lumentum Operations LLC Full time

We are seeking a highly skilled Reliability Engineer to join the Lumentum Operations LLC team in Ottawa. The successful candidate will be responsible for the qualification of leading edge optical and photonic telecommunication products to various international and customer standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional product development teams to ensure product reliability and durability exceeds customer requirements, industry standards, and market expectations.
  • Develop and implement qualification and reliability testing strategies for raw materials, sub-components, and finished products, working closely with a team of test engineers and technicians.
  • Predict failure rates and availability for new products, applying statistical analysis and engineering judgment.
  • Apply engineering expertise to select appropriate tests, measurement parameters, and acceptance criteria to align with field conditions and target lifetime.
  • Analyze data and report on findings, identifying issues and opportunities for improvement.
  • Monitor and report on the field reliability of deployed products, comparing with predictions.
  • Perform reliability risk assessments for quality excursions, applying physics of failure, acceleration modeling, experimentation, and other relevant techniques.
  • Coordinate and perform third-party testing with external labs, including NEBs, EMI/EMC, Electrical Safety, and LASER Safety, requiring occasional travel to set up and operate equipment.

Requirements:

  • Strong interest in understanding how things work, how they fail, and how they can be improved.
  • Able to scrutinize and interpret literature, reports, and data to provide meaningful recommendations.
  • Knowledge of statistics and data analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to operate effectively in a highly technical and multi-project environment.
  • Comfortable discussing issues with higher management and customers.
  • Graduation from a BSc. or MSc. program in electrical engineering, optical engineering, physics, or a related field.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Previous work experience in a reliability, product qualification, failure analysis, design engineering, process engineering, or compliance function.
  • Knowledge of electronics, optics, and optical communication systems.
  • Knowledge of electronic and optical manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of electrical and optical components, such as ICs, FPGAs, Interconnects, LASERs, Optical Detectors, Switches, WSS, MEMs, LCOS, etc.
  • Familiarity with optical and electrical measurement equipment.
  • Knowledge of IEC, JEDEC, and Telcordia Qualification Standards.
