Director Specialist, Electrical Engineer

VenorTalent is partnering with the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board to find a highly skilled Director Specialist, Electrical Engineer. This exciting opportunity allows you to join their team in Halifax, NS, and contribute to ensuring safe and reliable service at reasonable prices.

The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board is an independent regulatory body that oversees public utilities, including electric, water, and natural gas utilities, as well as auto insurance. They are recognized for their trusted leadership in adjudicative and regulatory matters.

This position reports to the Managing Director, Advisory Services, and involves providing expert advice to Board Members and Counsel on complex electric utility matters. Key responsibilities include:

  • Strategic planning and coordination of major files and matters;
  • Comprehensive analysis and opinion development on complex issues, including rate applications and capital expenditures;
  • Staying up-to-date on developing trends and technologies in the electric utility sector;
  • Supporting Board Counsel during hearings by drafting briefing notes and developing questions for cross-examination;
  • Analyzing filings for regulatory compliance and identifying key issues;
  • Evaluating utility applications for impacts on ratepayers;
  • Identifying and understanding evolving trends, opportunities, and risks in the electrical utility sector;
  • Representing the Board at technical conferences and stakeholder processes;
  • Researching and engaging expert witnesses and consultants;
  • Coordinating schedules and sequencing regulatory proceedings.

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • An Electrical Engineering degree from a recognized university;
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration with APENS;
  • A minimum of 15 years post-designation experience, preferably in power generation, transmission, distribution, and customer service;
  • Leadership and/or management experience, ideally with a large power utility;
  • Training and experience in engineering economic analysis, integrated resource planning, and network reliability analysis;
  • Knowledge of cost-of-service studies, principles of rate design, and regulatory fundamentals;
  • Strong technical background, combined with leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.

We offer a competitive salary, commensurate with your experience: $120,000 - $180,000 annually, depending on qualifications and location.
