Job Summary

The Indigenous Student Services Coordinator plays a vital role in facilitating the successful transition of Indigenous students from pre-application to graduation at Okanagan College. This position requires a holistic, student-centered approach to support the retention and academic success of Indigenous students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Entrance Advising: Assist prospective and current Indigenous students in meeting their personal career and educational objectives, providing information and advice on Okanagan College programs, admission requirements, and suitability.
  • Mentoring: Regularly communicate and interact with Indigenous students to support their educational journey, acknowledging their strengths and providing trauma-informed support as needed.
  • Community Liaison: Develop and maintain ongoing community connections and partnerships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and service providers, promoting Okanagan College and its programs to the external Indigenous community.
  • Campus Events: Lead or assist with planning, coordination, and delivery of culturally relevant events, supporting students and student employees with coordination of activities and events for other Indigenous students.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area (Indigenous studies, social work, education, etc.)
  • Minimum of 4 years related experience working with Indigenous learners, communities, and/or organizations
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous communities, customs, and history
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional public speaking skills
  • Exceptional customer service and a strong student-focused orientation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Training in trauma-informed care and nonviolent crisis intervention
  • Experience with post-secondary student recruitment, marketing, event organization, and working with committees and volunteers
