AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Reporting to the Manager of Development Services, the Planning Technician plays a crucial role in delivering technical assistance to the Division. Responsibilities include addressing inquiries related to planning, conducting research and field investigations, organizing and participating in meetings and public planning events, and providing comprehensive support for departmental studies and projects.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Responding to planning-related inquiries and providing necessary information while referring inquiries as appropriate.
  • Offering background information and guidance on application processes.
  • Logging and tracking applications for consent, minor variance, routine site plans, part-lot control, and heritage considerations.
  • Reviewing application submissions and requesting additional information when necessary.
  • Circulating applications to relevant departments and agencies for their feedback.
  • Analyzing comments based on professional planning principles and reconciling conflicting feedback.
  • Conducting research and site visits to clarify and process applications.
  • Preparing reports with recommendations for internal teams and committees.
  • Presenting at committee meetings and acting as a professional witness at planning appeals.
  • Updating Official and Secondary Plans, Zoning by-laws, and conditions of draft plan approvals.
  • Maintaining statistical databases and development records.
  • Performing site visits for potential heritage properties and related applications.
  • Conducting archival and file research.
  • Participating in planning projects and studies to support departmental initiatives.
  • Providing administrative support, including research, report drafting, and preparation of meeting materials.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • High school graduation plus an additional program of three to four years in Urban or Regional Planning, or equivalent.
  • A valid Ontario Class G driver's licence is an asset.
  • Up to two months of relevant experience is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a focus on customer service.
  • Excellent organizational, research, and time/project management abilities.
  • Knowledge of provincial/regional planning policies and best practices.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

Note: Various assessments may be conducted as part of the selection process.

Interview: The recruitment process may include video conferencing.

Candidates lacking formal educational qualifications but possessing relevant experience may also be considered.
