Organization Overview: Surjaction is a national entity dedicated to mobilizing white individuals in the pursuit of racial and economic equity. Our mission is to dismantle the influence of the Far Right and cultivate a multiracial coalition advocating for the essential needs of all communities. We engage white individuals by highlighting their shared interests in solidarity with people of color through over 150 local chapters across the US and Canada, a National Membership base, and localized initiatives in the South.

Department Overview: The Communications Department is responsible for managing Surjaction's messaging to both internal and external stakeholders through various digital platforms, media outreach, campaigns, events, and relations with donors, members, and partners. The team comprises the Director, Deputy Director of External Communications, Deputy Director of Internal Communications, Digital Content Strategist, and Communications Campaign Lead.

Position Summary: Surjaction is in search of a Director of Communications Strategy to spearhead our narrative development and strategic communication efforts across diverse campaigns. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic leader with a visionary, innovative, and analytical mindset, dedicated to advancing Surjaction's vital mission in today's context. This individual should possess the ability to execute plans effectively, navigate complex decision-making in high-pressure environments, and manage multiple priorities. They will provide guidance and leadership to the communications department, which will carry out much of the operational work.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Brand Identity and Communications Strategy (50%):
    1. Enhance Surjaction's strategic objectives for organizing, fundraising, and organizational growth through targeted communications strategies.
    2. As Surjaction expands to advocate for multiracial democracy, evolve our communications strategy and team to align with this growth.
    3. Direct the organization’s rapid response and long-term communication plans by monitoring news, cultural shifts, and political developments.
    4. Elevate the visibility of the Executive Director and other key representatives.
    5. Facilitate the integration of communications across all organizational departments.
    6. Articulate Surjaction's voice through diverse content formats, including donor updates, opinion pieces, national communications, and public statements.
  2. Strategic Development (30%):
    1. Represent Surjaction at key narrative and communication strategy events and conferences.
    2. Craft and drive the vision for Surjaction's long-term narrative transformation and external cultural initiatives.
    3. Identify and articulate strategic challenges and opportunities for the Communications Team as it evolves.
    4. Collaborate with senior leadership to inform and guide the organization’s programmatic priorities.
  3. Team Development and Management (20%):
    1. Establish the operational tone and norms within the communications department, promoting a culture of inclusion, transparency, collaboration, and accountability.
    2. Lead the growth of the communications department, mentoring senior staff and fostering a cohesive team that collaborates effectively with the organization.
    3. Oversee the Communications department budget.
    4. Strategically plan for new hires and lead recruitment processes.
    5. Ensure the development of political education and leadership skills among Communications team members.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 10 years of relevant experience in an organization with a budget exceeding $3 million.
  • 10+ years in social justice movements, demonstrating a successful track record in campaign victories and organizational advancement.
  • Proven expertise in strategic communications and narrative transformation.
  • Experience in developing and executing long-term and rapid response operational plans.
  • Experience in team supervision and consultant management.
  • Compliance with Surjaction's policy requiring full COVID-19 vaccination, with accommodations as legally permissible.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Proficiency in a broad spectrum of digital communication tools, with the ability to guide staff in their application.
  • Familiarity with the progressive donor funding landscape.
  • Strong commitment to collective liberation and adeptness in navigating a multi-racial, cross-class, multi-gender movement.
  • Deep alignment with Surjaction's mission and capacity to serve as a compelling, visionary leader.

SKILLS:

  • Exceptional writing abilities, capable of producing content for diverse audiences efficiently.
  • In-depth knowledge of current progressive politics and social movements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, fostering robust relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
