Under the supervision of Management (or designate), the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) collaborates with and supports all personnel within Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PLM) by executing various tasks related to the pre-analytical and post-analytical phases of testing. Responsibilities may include: specimen collection, receipt, processing, data entry, preparation of media/reagents/smears, sterilization, clerical duties, and loading specimens onto analyzers. Additional duties may encompass supply management, troubleshooting, and customer service interactions.
Accurate patient identification and proper specimen handling are critical to this role. Responsibilities may vary based on the operational needs of the laboratory site/division/community where the MLA is assigned. The MLA may be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, and/or holidays, and may also work off-site, including long-term care facilities or private homes as needed. Interaction with various stakeholders and clients is also a part of the role. Incumbents must comply with all relevant NSH/PLM policies and procedures. Strict adherence to safety and infection prevention protocols is mandatory. MLAs should be capable of working independently, exercising sound judgment, maintaining a professional appearance (in accordance with dress code policy), and demonstrating exceptional customer service.
We welcome applications from individuals who possess the following qualifications:
- Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent (as determined by the employer)
- Successful completion of the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations by the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and current registration with CSMLS (Consideration may be given to applicants who commit to completing an accredited MLA program and achieving CSMLS certification within one year of hire)
- Willingness to travel to local Indigenous communities
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology
- High attention to detail
- Manual dexterity for handling sharp instruments and small items
- Ability to perform tasks with a high degree of accuracy
- Competence in accurately numbering/labeling specimens and filing slides/requisitions
- Adaptability to changes in operating procedures
- Basic computer skills; Meditech experience is preferred
- Access to reliable transportation as travel may be necessary
- Proficiency in additional languages is an asset, with French preferred

Work Schedule- Permanent, Full-Time Position; 75 Hours Bi-weekly
$26.27 per hour
