Responsibilities
Reporting to the Operations Shift Supervisor, this role is accountable for the safe and efficient loading of all products processed at the Moose Jaw Refinery into railcars. Key responsibilities include ensuring that the railcars are secured and adequately prepared for safe loading operations. This position also involves inspecting the railcars for defects, ensuring proper placarding, and coordinating with the operations team to maintain a clean and safe work environment. The railcar loader may also be required to perform other trained roles as necessary to support the plant's safety and operational continuity. This is a training position with expectations for progress in completing all levels of the operator training and competency program, along with adherence to established procedures.

Key Duties
Maintenance Responsibilities

  • Verify that railcars are securely positioned before initiating loading operations, ensuring all wheel chocks are in place.
  • Confirm that all railcars are adequately prepared and inspected, ensuring all components are secure and properly positioned.
  • Inspect the belly valve to ensure it is in the correct position prior to loading.
  • Maintain all equipment associated with railcar loading.

Compliance with Regulations

  • Ensure all necessary placards are displayed to identify the product within the railcar.
  • Complete all required documentation accurately to reflect the loaded product.
  • Report any spills or incidents to the operations supervisor.

Project Support

  • Participate in project HAZOPs and provide necessary support for projects.
  • Offer operational insights during the initiation and development phases of growth projects.
  • Review operational activities related to readiness and commissioning during execution phases.
  • Act as a liaison for operations on project teams.

General Responsibilities

  • Ensure all related equipment is isolated when not in use.
  • Adhere to all written procedures for railcar loading.
  • Execute the loading of railcars, ensuring the correct products are loaded.
  • Complete all related paperwork in compliance with regulations.
  • Collect product samples and investigate any quality issues reported by the laboratory.
  • Notify the operations supervisor of any product quality or safety concerns.
  • Monitor and maintain the operation of all equipment related to railcar loading.
  • Ensure the upkeep and cleanliness of all equipment associated with rail loading facilities.
  • Utilize safe work permits and gas testing equipment as required.
  • Conduct railcar inspections and checklists to ensure readiness for transport.
  • Implement safety measures to prevent movement of cars during loading.
  • Identify and recommend enhancements for railcar loading processes.
  • Document operational knowledge into procedures where tasks are performed based on training and experience.
  • Provide emergency response and on-call support as needed.
  • Ensure effective shift handover processes to communicate ongoing activities and associated hazards.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSS&E) through active participation in relevant programs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Skills

  • Certification in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the operation, shutdown, start-up, and emergency procedures of railcar loading equipment is preferred.
  • Completion of training on all procedures related to railcar loading is preferred.
  • Proficiency in using PCs and Microsoft Windows software, including Word and Excel.
  • A certificate in 4th Class Power Engineering is an asset, or a willingness to pursue certification.

  • Technical skills to understand emergency/safety procedures related to railcar loading.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through logbooks and shift activity reports.
  • Familiarity with all paperwork related to product handling and shipping.
  • Conduct Hazard Identifications to ensure safe plant operations.
  • Interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with team members and management.
  • Clear expression of ideas in both written and verbal communication.
  • Professional representation of the company.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment while maintaining safety and attention to detail.

Working Conditions

  • This role involves hands-on operation of equipment in an outdoor setting.
  • Availability for regular work hours and on-call emergency response is required.
  • This position is subject to background checks as per company policy, which may include drug and alcohol testing, employment history verification, and criminal history checks.
