Course: HUMN-3001: Reading Popular Culture (0.5 credit)
Course Overview: This course delves into mass media as a primary cultural force that shapes societal norms while offering materials for social reproduction and transformation. The course aims to foster critical reflection and discussion regarding various popular cultural genres within contemporary Canadian and global contexts. Through the examination of genres such as soap operas, science fiction, fashion, and dance music, students will engage with diverse analytical frameworks to interrogate the politics of representation, distribution, production, and consumption.
Key Responsibilities: Responsibilities related to teaching may encompass but are not limited to: developing course outlines, preparing and delivering studio sessions including lectures, critiques, grading, mid-term assessments, and final evaluations. Additionally, instructors will be responsible for health and safety protocols and ensuring compliance with academic and curricular standards.
Qualifications:
- A terminal degree in art, design, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Prior experience in post-secondary education is advantageous; relevant experience will also be considered.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication abilities.
- Proven leadership skills and a commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive environment for students, staff, and faculty.
Employment Terms: Sessional appointments are fixed-term contracts. Compensation is based on a per-course pay scale, with a salary of $6,000 per 0.5 credit course, plus 7% in lieu of benefits and vacation pay, in accordance with the Employment Standards Act. These positions are contingent upon budgetary approval and satisfactory enrollment levels.
