Sessional Instructor: Exploring Popular Culture in Contemporary Contexts

OCAD University invites applications for a sessional instructor position in the Faculty of Arts & Science. The successful candidate will teach the course HUMN-3001: Reading Popular Culture in the fall/winter 2024-25 terms.
Course Overview:
This course examines the mass media as a dominant form of culture that socializes us while providing the materials for social reproduction and change. The emphasis is on stimulating critical reflection and debate relevant to an understanding of various popular cultural genres in contemporary Canadian and global cultures. In studying various genres, including soap opera, science fiction, fashion, and dance music, we compare different analytical approaches to reading culture and questioning the politics of representation, distribution, production, and consumption.
Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching and teaching-related responsibilities, including course outline development, studio preparation and delivery, grading, mid-term evaluations, and final evaluations/reviews. The candidate should have a terminal degree in art, design, or a relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience. Experience teaching at the post-secondary level is considered an asset, and equivalent relevant experience will be considered. The successful candidate will also demonstrate outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, as well as leadership and experience promoting a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty.
Terms of Employment:
Sessional appointments are fixed-term annual contracts. Sessional compensation includes a per-course pay scale with a salary level of $6,871.00 (per 0.5 credit course) plus 7% in lieu of benefits and vacation pay, per the provisions of the Employment Standards Act. These positions are subject to budgetary approval and satisfactory enrolment levels.
