The Legal Services Division of Alberta Justice is the civil legal advisor to the Government of Alberta. Our team provides legal advice to Government departments, manages risks, conducts civil litigation, and drafts bills, regulations, Orders in Council, and Ministerial orders. We are looking for a dynamic lawyer to provide solicitor services to our clients and build on solid relationships.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Drafting substantive legal opinions (often with cross-ministry involvement)
- Providing legal and strategic advice to a diverse group of clients, with a focus on:
- Administrative Law
- Contracts Law
- Corporate Law
- Statutory Interpretation
- Privacy Law
- Drafting and review of contracts, grants, and other legal agreements
- Legal advisory services for the development of legislative projects
- Advising on procurement issues
- Conducting legal research
- Acting as a resource for Legal Services Division colleagues
To achieve success in this role, you will demonstrate:
- A strong client focus with the ability to respond quickly to address client needs;
- Excellent problem solving and interpersonal skills;
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills;
- High flexibility and the ability to work alone and with a team;
Qualifications
A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (JD). For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required. You must be an active member or must have immediate eligibility for full membership with the Law Society of Alberta.
Below is the minimum number of years required for each classification:
- Civil Crown Counsel 1 (up to 4 years of related experience)
- Civil Crown Counsel 2 (4 years to 11 years of related experience)
- Civil Crown Counsel 3 (over 11 years of related experience)
Assets include experience providing legal advice on:
- Contracts and procurement
- Statutory interpretation
- Domestic trade agreements (CFTA and NWPTA)
- International trade agreements (CUSMA, WTO Agreements, CETA/Canada-UK TCA, CPTPP)
- Dispute settlement processes (in the trade and procurement context or otherwise)
