Position: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Family Newborn Care Unit

Role Summary: The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) plays a crucial role within an interdisciplinary care team, working collaboratively to deliver tailored care that meets the unique needs of patients and their families. The LPN is accountable for their practice, adhering to the standards set forth by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing, as well as the policies and procedures of IWK Health.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide independent care to patients with well-defined health needs and stable conditions.
- Collaborate with Registered Nurses (RNs) and other healthcare professionals for patients requiring more complex care.
- Utilize practical nursing theory in patient assessments and the development of nursing care plans.
- Engage in ongoing evaluation of patient conditions and adapt care plans as necessary.
Work Schedule: The position involves 11.25-hour shifts, with a rotation of long and short weeks, including both day and night shifts.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited Practical Nurse Diploma Program is required; a two-year diploma is preferred.
- Current licensure or eligibility for licensure with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing is essential.
- Completion of pharmacology and health assessment courses is mandatory.
- Recent clinical experience in medication administration and health assessments is required.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada is necessary.
- Ability to function effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team is crucial.
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills are essential.
- Demonstrated professionalism and effective communication skills are required.
- Initiative, time management, and organizational skills are necessary.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development is expected.
- Proficiency in additional languages is considered an asset.
