Position Overview

The Senior Director of ESG Initiatives is responsible for leading Crombie's Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Sustainability programs, ensuring effective execution and strategic alignment across various business sectors. This role entails managing a multifaceted and dynamic area, integrating Crombie's ESG objectives throughout the organization to foster growth and enhance corporate culture.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and refine Crombie's ESG Strategy, including the Climate Action Plan, collaborating across departments to communicate objectives and translate them into actionable and measurable outcomes.
  • Remain informed about industry-leading environmental and sustainability practices, ensuring compliance and risk management at all governmental levels.
  • Identify and implement advanced technologies that support Crombie's ESG strategy and Climate Action Plan, including necessary data and utility tracking systems.
  • Oversee all ESG-related projects and initiatives (e.g., decarbonization strategies, certifications, tenant engagement, diversity, equity, and inclusion, data management), ensuring alignment with our ESG priorities.
  • Establish standardized processes and reporting frameworks to advance our ESG strategy in accordance with GRESB, Measurabl, and other relevant reporting standards, continuously researching and updating programs as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the Operations team to enhance environmental standards, programs, and reporting across our locations.
  • Work with People & Culture and Communications leadership to ensure all social initiatives align with and support the overall ESG strategy.
  • Partner with Finance and Accounting leadership to ensure governance-related activities are consistent with and promote the overall ESG strategy.
  • Manage and coordinate periodic materiality assessments related to ESG, with third-party support as needed.
  • Oversee ESG plans and public disclosures, including the ESG Strategy, Climate Action/Decarbonization Plans, Annual ESG Report, quarterly updates, and benchmark submissions (e.g., GRESB, SASB, TCFD), ensuring collaboration with various business units and oversight of third-party involvement.
  • Lead Crombie's ESG Working Group and participate in the ESG Steering Committee, DEI Advisory Committee, and other relevant committees.
  • Develop and manage ESG and Climate Action budgets, collaborating with key business units to ensure timely and cost-effective project delivery.
  • Proactively advocate for ESG initiatives both internally and externally.
  • Identify industry best practices and evaluate the long-term value of emerging ESG trends and technologies.
  • Undertake additional special projects and tasks as assigned.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with a university degree in Business, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field. You possess a minimum of five (5) years of experience in ESG or Project Management, or in a comparable leadership position. Strong project management skills are essential, and certifications in sustainability or project management are highly regarded. You are knowledgeable about global and industry ESG trends and their application in commercial, retail, and residential real estate. A passion for addressing environmental and social challenges, coupled with exceptional verbal and written communication skills, is crucial. You demonstrate excellent analytical abilities and familiarity with sustainability strategy and reporting metrics. The successful candidate will excel in building positive relationships, leading through influence across diverse teams, fostering consensus, and prioritizing actions that yield results. Proven experience in managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders is required.
