Position Overview:

Reporting to the Director of Environment, Health and Safety, the Environmental Programs Manager is tasked with the strategic design, implementation, and management of activities that bolster the environmental management systems. This role emphasizes adherence to policy, risk reduction, continuous enhancement, compliance with international standards, and alignment with legislative mandates.

The individual in this position will lead a dedicated team of professionals to deliver environmental program and project support, enhance organizational performance, and assist internal stakeholders in managing environmental risks, hazards, and incidents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all proactive and reactive environmental program initiatives, including the execution, maintenance, and enhancement of ISO 14001 management system components, such as forecasting, planning, execution, and reporting.
  • Provide strategic recommendations for the organization’s environmental policies, business strategies, and programs.
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments to analyze the implications of utility projects, offering guidance on minimizing adverse effects and promoting sustainability, leading to effective mitigation strategies.
  • Aggregate and evaluate environmental data to identify trends and foster improvements in EHS programs and processes.
  • Prepare internal and external environmental compliance documentation and support the completion of annual plans.
  • Collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders to pinpoint environmental risks, set objectives, and formulate programs aimed at continuous improvement and compliance.
  • Design and implement comprehensive environmental programs, procedures, and training initiatives.
  • Address escalated environmental issues and coordinate with external regulatory agencies, providing on-site emergency support in collaboration with various emergency response teams as necessary.
  • Manage a team that delivers planned and responsive environmental client support, including advisory services, consultations, incident investigations, and oversight within the Environmental delivery program.
  • Lead investigations concerning environmental matters and provide frontline EHS leadership at incident sites as required.
  • Review client environmental compliance, develop enhancement plans, and monitor their execution.
  • Drive the ongoing review and renewal of environmental policies, processes, and systems.
  • Consolidate and present performance data related to environmental initiatives, make informed recommendations, and implement continuous improvement strategies.
  • Supervise the daily operations of a small internal team and external subject matter experts/vendors, managing aspects such as safety, attendance, performance, and professional development.
  • Provide coaching and constructive feedback to motivate and engage team members in achieving departmental objectives.
  • Lead and execute departmental environment, health, and safety projects and initiatives (both proactive and reactive) as necessary to enhance performance outcomes.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in environmental science, health, safety, or a related field.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in the design, development, implementation, and reporting of environment, health, and safety programs, including auditing.
  • At least two years of experience in environmental program design.
  • Three to five years of progressive leadership experience in managing people and projects.
  • Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Environmental Professional (EP) is preferred.
  • Experience with environmental, health, and safety management systems (EHSMS) is highly desirable.
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant scientific field is an asset.
  • Utility or industry experience is beneficial.
  • Proficient in environmental audit processes and root cause corrective action methodologies.
  • Familiarity with ISO 14001 compliance standards and environmental management practices is preferred.
  • Knowledge of current industry environmental regulations, standards, and best practices.
  • Strong skills in project management, stakeholder engagement, facilitation, and change management.
  • Excellent negotiation skills and the ability to influence others effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

This position supports a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for remote work based on business needs. Employees are expected to be available for in-person activities as determined by operational requirements.
